We’re a proudly diverse company and inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at auticon. That starts with our assessment process, which has been designed to make you, and all our autistic candidates, feel comfortable to be your authentic self. For our operations roles, the process will vary but the job advert will provide more details about what to expect.Â
If you’re applying to our Consulting Team Talent Pool, we’ll support you through a 4-stage process and you’ll receive detailed information about each stage when you apply. We want you to be able to demonstrate your skills and capabilities and feel like the process has been a positive experience. Our assessment process is a vital part of the initial work we do with you to understand what support we can give to enable you to succeed as a Consultant. Understanding your individuality helps us place you in work environments suited to your strengths and informs us about the adjustments our clients could make to ensure you thrive when you join them.Â
As a Consulting business, how many people we hire and when is directly linked to demand from our clients. If you join auticon as a Consultant, you’ll be a permanent employee of auticon, but most of your day-to-day work will be with one of our clients. You’ll add skills and expertise to the client’s team or project. Most of our clients are large multinationals and public sector organisations who require expertise in areas such as data analysis, data visualisation, data engineering, cyber security, machine learning or AI. You get the chance to work on interesting assignments with our clients, whilst still having all the support of being an auticon employee. When you’re between projects, your employment with us continues and we support you to further develop your skills. We’re always looking for new client projects for our current employees, and we’re always trying to expand our client network so we can hire more people for our Consulting Team. Asking candidates to apply to our Consulting Team Talent Pool allows us to react quickly when client demand increases and helps us to assess your suitability for future client projects before we know exactly what they’ll be.Â
The first part of our assessment process is focused on checking you meet our criteria as a social enterprise and building up a picture of your technical profile so we can be sure you have the skills most in demand among our clients. We assess this via your initial application, which involves sending us your CV and answering a few key questions. If you meet our criteria, we invite you to complete an IT Skills Survey, which is a simple self-assessment of your technical skills and can highlight strengths that may not have been obvious on your CV. We use the information you provide in the IT Skills Survey to set you an appropriate online technical assessment to gather further evidence of your skills. You can complete this assessment at home at a time that suits you and lots of detail on what to expect is provided.Â
If you demonstrate the skills and experience we require, we’ll move you on to Stage 2.Â
The online technical assessment provides us with evidence you have the key technical skills required for the role of Consultant, but we like to explore your suitability in more depth through an informal conversation with our Technical Team. This is usually held as a Teams call at a time that suits you. We provide more information about the topics that will be covered in advance and invite you to complete a short questionnaire to help inform the discussion.Â
Once we’re confident you have the technical skills required to be an auticon Consultant, we move on to gaining further evidence of strengths relevant to the role. We ask you to complete an online cognitive assessment, in your own time, that demonstrates abilities in the areas of attention to detail, pattern recognition, error detection and sustained attention. We follow this up with another informal conversation, this time with our Coaching Team. This part is as much for you as it is for us. auticon can only be successful when our Consultants feel understood and supported. Our Coaching Team have many years of experience working in the autism community. Their goal is to learn who you are, the type of environment you need to thrive and how you would feel about scenarios that may arise in your role as a Consultant. We can start to discuss reasonable adjustments and what support you may benefit from if you join our team. They are also ready to answer questions you may have about auticon and our support model.Â
If we feel you have the potential to join us as a Consultant, we add you to our Talent Pool. This means we’ll create an auticon Consultant profile for you. We then begin the process of matching you to a first client project. It’s important to us to be transparent that there is no set timeframe for how long this will take as it depends on client demand. This means you may be in our Talent Pool for some time whilst we build interest in auticon Consultant profiles among our clients. There is no guarantee that we’ll be able to move you forward to the final stage of our process or make an offer. If we do find a potential client project suited to your profile, we’ll invite you to attend an in-person conversation.Â
Most of our recruitment process is virtual, but we feel it’s important to meet in person. This is an opportunity to meet the broader auticon team at one of our office locations and discuss the first client project we have in mind for you, as well as another chance to talk about the role of auticon Consultant more generally. We can also discuss start dates and other technicalities in more detail before hopefully making you an offer of employment to become a permanent member of the auticon team.Â

At University, Sarah felt understood and supported. However, after finishing her Ph.D., she found it hard to find a job; “Much of it was down to not knowing how to transfer my skills from my degree into a workplace setting. Job adverts for entry-level jobs were often worded in a way that asked for several years of experience as a requirement.”
Her pre-diagnosis experience had been draining; “I was in a job which required me to mask all day long, learning a script to cope with all the communications and interactions, and suppressing my sensory needs. It eventually led to burnout and having to leave the job.”
The adjustments Sarah now has in the workplace greatly increased her energy levels and reduced her anxiety, allowing her to be happier, cope with daily life tasks, and enjoy her free time. Working with auticon’s job coaches has helped Sarah develop coping mechanisms and identify her anxiety and potential burnout behaviors. The accepting community at auticon is also a significant factor, as it frees her from having to mask.
“I would also add that working in this understanding and supportive climate has helped me with my confidence and assertiveness,” She adds.
We believe affecting change in one life is the starting point for changing society. We therefore measure our social performance through the difference auticon makes to the lives of our autistic colleagues, the impact on our customer organisations, and the role we play in creating awareness of neurodiversity in society.
Between 15-20% of the global population are neurodivergent. 2% are estimated to be autistic. Despite many autistic people being talented, qualified and keen to work, only 29% of autistic people are in full time work. Within the autistic workforce, a vast majority are under-employed, working in jobs that they are over-qualified or over-skilled for.Â
