In the fall of 2020 Unicus partnered with the City of Helsinki wanting additional resources for accessibility testing, aiming to develop and improve the digital service concepts and customer experience of the City of Helsinki. Starting from 2022, Unicus is also consulting in major accessibility-related projects at the City of Helsinki, providing digital accessibility consulting services.

Kati Seppälä, the Project Manager for Accessibility at the City of Helsinki, who has been part of this shared journey from the beginning, views the collaboration with Unicus as a significant factor in the efficient development of processes and the achievement of goals in the project.Alusta asti matkassa mukana ollut Helsingin Kaupungin saavutettavuuden Projektipäällikkö, Kati Seppälä, kokee yhteistyön Unicuksen kanssa olevan vaikuttava tekijä prosessien tehokkaassa kehittymisessä ja tavoitteiden saavuttamisessa.

“They are committed to the work and the project. Everything is done thoroughly, even with tight deadlines,” Seppälä notes.

“They are committed to the work and the project. Everything is done thoroughly, even with tight deadlines,” Seppälä notes.

Seppälä refers to Unicus consultants Emmi Nyqvist and Eero Helanen, who have been working in the successful project from the very start. Satisfaction with one’s work and the meaningfulness of the work is also clearly noticeable among the consultants, who enjoy developing digital content and improving accessibility.

“Accessibility consulting is a very versatile profession,” Nyqvist begins.

“Our responsibilities cover the entire lifecycle of creating accessible digital services, from workshops and component design to auditing the published services and correcting documents. The versatility of the role, working independently, and the possibilities for continuous learning while working with other professionals make every day interesting,” Nyqvist reflects.

Nyqvist mentions that the best part of the job, however, is knowing that she is helping to make everyday life a bit easier for many people. Helanen agrees and adds:

“Accessibility is something you don’t hear much about unless it directly affects you. As partially sighted, I’ve started to truly notice how much there is to improve in web accessibility only after I started working in this consulting team”.

Helanen adds that the open discussions and exchange of ideas within the team continuously provide new thoughts and considerations.

Investing in accessibility truly pays off: it enhances equality in an increasingly digital society and makes independent use of digital services possible for more people. Successful accessibility starts with human-centric design and implementation, both of which are key elements in the consulting services provided by Unicus.

“I warmly recommend collaborating with Unicus,” Seppälä starts.

“I can always trust that the team shares my commitment to reliability and punctuality, values important to me while collaborating. Questions are answered quickly and with a thought.”

Seppälä ends the interview by stating that when dealing with Unicus, one thing is for sure: the employees are loyal, and the work is done wholeheartedly.
